You can do hard things

Yesterday I had my PhD viva. It’s an oral defence of my thesis that determines whether or not I pass so it’s a big deal. Luckily I passed and I’m really proud of that. I have been told a number of times that I am average. Contrary to popular opinion, I don’t see that as a bad thing, statistically most people are average! However, just because you are average, it does not mean that you can’t do hard things. To be clear, sometimes hard work isn’t enough. There is an element of luck involved in almost anything you do, regardless of whether you want to admit that or not. I feel hugely fortunate to have been given the opportunity to study for a PhD and I will never take that for granted. It’s okay to have self-doubts, they are not a character flaw but it is important that you don’t let them stop you from taking action to get to where you want to be. You are so much more capable than you think and you can do hard things.
