Why it’s okay to just wing it in the gym sometimes

In the fitness industry, we tend to put routines, structure, rules, plans and programmes on a pedestal. We talk a lot about optimising but very little about fitting this within our daily lives, which are inherently challenging, messy and unpredictable. I am naturally a creature of habit so winging it does not come easily to me at all. However, I’ve found that when I allow myself to sometimes go with the flow, I find it more enjoyable than I expected. I’ve recently stopped having a fitness coach for the first time in the last 4 years and I’ve allowed myself to sometimes go into the gym with only a loose idea of what I’m going to do. It’s actually really nice to be able to see what I feel like doing that day, rather than what is written in my plan. It’s good to be in touch with what we want to do even if we decide to go against that sometimes. I’ve been a big advocate of mindfulness for a long time but I realised that my habits were sometimes preventing me from truly getting in touch with what I was really feeling and wanting. I’m going to make more of an effort to balance ‘going with the flow’ with sticking to a plan. I’m excited to see where it takes me!
