Why do pleasures have to be guilty?

I know ‘guilty pleasure’ it’s a phrase that people throw around without thinking much about it but I think it’s problematic. I think the words we use matter, whether we’re aware of that or not.

There is an issue with the underlying message behind that phrase. The idea that we should feel bad about doing things that we enjoy, things that bring us pleasure that may or may not be different to what others like to do with their time.

It’s okay to do things you enjoy with no strings attached. You don’t have to justify it to yourself or others. If it’s something unique, thats great! If we all liked the same things, we wouldn’t have as much to talk about with others.

You have the right to be yourself unapologetically. If people don’t like it, that’s on them. It’s hard to embrace who you really are, what you like and dislike and what you really want. However, it brings such freedom and that is always worth working for.
