Tools to help you ditch dieting
When you decide you want to quit dieting, it can feel like you’re up the creek without a paddle. That’s why going back to restricting can seem so tempting. It is known, it seems like that’s what everyone is doing and it’s held in high esteem by society. Fortunately, there are a lot of tools that can help. Self-compassion is hugely valuable. This isn’t ‘letting yourself off the hook’, it is giving yourself the space to learn and grow. It is letting go of perfectionism and allowing yourself to make mistakes.
Open-mindedness is also key. Embracing a non-diet approach means going against the status quo. Diet culture tells you that stopping restriction means giving up and letting yourself go. You need to be willing to resist those messages and be open to seeing what happens for you, what you are able to do that you couldn’t before and how you can connect with others. Patience also matters. Leaving the diet mentality behind is tough and you won’t become an intuitive eater overnight. There’s a reason that my clients stay with me for months rather than weeks. This process takes time but it is possible for you, I promise.
