How to deal with ‘trigger foods’

This is something that comes up a lot with my clients so I thought it might be useful to discuss here.⁣ ⁣ When you’re relatively new to intuitive eating, you might find that there are certain foods you particularly struggle with eating in an amount that feels good.⁣ ⁣ This is because of the previous restriction, often caused by the alarmist messages diet culture gives about particular foods. ⁣ ⁣ Making peace with these foods means giving yourself full permission. This means buying them, having them in a regular place in your home and allowing yourself to have it when you want.⁣ ⁣ Initially, you might eat the food in large amounts, past fullness, and that’s totally normal. You’re not greedy, your body is just trying to keep you safe. ⁣ ⁣ If you stick with it, this will ease over time, which is known as habituation. Sometimes, you might even find out you don’t like the food as much as you thought. ⁣ ⁣ This is one of those things that you have to practice to believe. I know it seems counter to everything you’ve been told but it works.⁣ You can get to a place where you eat whatever you want without guilt, anxiety or judgment.
