How to deal with ‘trigger foods’
This is something that comes up a lot with my clients so I thought it might be useful to discuss here. When you’re relatively new to intuitive eating, you might find that there are certain foods you particularly struggle with eating in an amount that feels good. This is because of the previous restriction, often caused by the alarmist messages diet culture gives about particular foods. Making peace with these foods means giving yourself full permission. This means buying them, having them in a regular place in your home and allowing yourself to have it when you want. Initially, you might eat the food in large amounts, past fullness, and that’s totally normal. You’re not greedy, your body is just trying to keep you safe. If you stick with it, this will ease over time, which is known as habituation. Sometimes, you might even find out you don’t like the food as much as you thought. This is one of those things that you have to practice to believe. I know it seems counter to everything you’ve been told but it works. You can get to a place where you eat whatever you want without guilt, anxiety or judgment.
