Body positivity is not a hashtag

I see the term body positivity thrown around a lot on social media, in both a promotional and a critical way. However, I rarely see it defined as the social justice movement that it is. Body positivity is not people feeling positive about their bodies 24/7. It’s not about telling people to be unhealthy. It’s not really about individuals at all, it’s about society. Body positivity emerged in the 1960s with the rise of the fat acceptance movement. This was a reaction to anti-fat discrimination and a drive to show that all bodies are valid. It’s a way to fight marginalisation and celebrate diversity in all forms. You have the right to share your opinion and do whatever you choose with your body but you can’t redefine a social justice movement as a hashtag.
