An apple vs a doughnut
When I was studying for my Master’s degree in health psychology, a lecturer put a picture on the board which had an apple on one side and a doughnut on the other. He asked us which was healthier. Everyone said the apple and he challenged that idea. He spoke about the importance of context. We discussed the different situations where a doughnut might be the better choice: where you were really hungry, where you’d missed a meal, when you needed some energy before a workout etc. Yes, of course an apple contains more micronutrients than a doughnut but health is not a single choice. Health is not a snapshot in time of a particular food, it is a much bigger picture. It’s mental and physical. It’s about the long term. It’s inextricably linked with privilege. Health is complex.
