5 signs that you are not eating enough



I find so many people worry about overeating and gaining weight that they are actually undereating for their fitness goals. It can be tricky to identify whether or not you are undereating but here are 5 indicators that you might be:⠀ 1. Poor quality sleep: If you are struggling to get off to sleep, waking up frequently during the night or waking very early in the morning, you might be undereating. If your body doesn't think its getting enough calories, it certainly doesn't want to put you into a state where it is not getting fuel for an extended period of time. 2. Always moody: We all know the hangry feeling but if you aren't eating enough you might find that you feel grouchy for a lot of the day if you are consistently undereating. We have a number of neurotransmitters that are involved in mood regulation and our food intake affects their activity. To be clear, this does not mean that you can treat a mental illness using food, just that food intake affects our daily mood. 3. Consistently cold: When your body doesn't think it is getting enough fuel in, it slows down bodily functions in an attempt to conserve energy, which makes you feel cold. You've probably noticed the reverse of this too when you feel hot after a large meal, which is a sign of your body ramping things up to deal with that higher intake. 4. Bad digestion: If you are going very infrequently and/or continually constipated, this is a sign that you might not be eating enough. Like I mentioned above, when your body isn't getting enough fuel it will slow down things like digestion in an attempt to conserve energy. 5. Become ill often: When we aren't eating enough, the hormone cortisol is elevated. Although cortisol is meant to boost immunity and lower inflammation in the short term, its long-term effects are exactly the opposite. Chronically high cortisol levels are associated with poor immunity, which means you’re more likely to catch that next cold when it goes around.
